Cute Animal Pictures Improve Health
Partnering with Tourism Western Australia, the University of Leeds explored the physiological and psychological impact of "cute" animals on students and staff at the college. According to a statement, 19 participants were asked to watch a 30-minute slide show that included images and short video clips of a range of animals, including Australia's iconic marsupial the quokka.
15 of the 19 participants were due to take an exam 90 minutes after watching the slide show. The remaining four participants were academic support staff who had declared they were feeling stressed at work. Heart rates for every single participant dropped after viewing images and videos of cute animals for just 30 minutes. The average blood pressure (BP) across all participants also dropped: from 136/88 to 115/71—moving the group average to within the ideal blood pressure range.
Participants who watched the half-hour slideshow also had to answer 20 questions so researchers could assess stress levels under the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. In individual cases, anxiety levels dropped by almost 50%: proving viewing cute animals can be a powerful stress reliever and a mood enhancer. In fact, across all measures there was a drop in anxiety and stress as a result of watching the short slide show.
So what's best: images of cute animals, videos, or the real thing? Dr. Andrea Utley, who led the study, commented, "It would appear that images appeal, but video clips are more meaningful, and I would therefore expect that physical closeness [with animals] would be even better."
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Harmonizing chaotic energies reduces stress, which may be why soft, furry, or small, smiling animals lower stress levels. Our Clean Sweep Clearing Spray does the same thing, so hold your favorite cute animal while misting yourself for super stress relief.

Feel Gratitude for Better Health
The first fMRI images of a brain experiencing gratitude were taking in 2008. The scans showed that gratitude causes synchronized activation of multiple regions of the brain, including some of the brain's reward pathways and the hypothalamus, which plays a crucial role in releasing hormones throughout our bodies.
Later, in 2009, researchers realized that these higher levels of activity in the hypothalamus had a huge influence on metabolism and stress levels. This means that gratitude could have such wide-reaching positive effects that you begin to eat better and sleep more, which could ultimately lead to decreased depression and better physical health.
A 2015 study from the University of Southern California hypothesized that gratitude spikes activity in the regions of the brain associated with moral cognition, value judgment, and theory of mind (the anterior cingulate cortex and medial prefrontal cortex, respectively). The FMRI data results of the study, which included 26 participants ranging in ages 18-28, confirmed activity spikes in those regions.
That same year, another study was conducted, this time on individuals who had pre-existing mental health concerns. These 293 people were recruited for this study at a time when their mental health was at an all-time clinical low, as they hadn't yet begun counseling sessions. The majority of these participants struggled with depression and/or anxiety.
The subjects were divided at random into three groups: a control group (psychotherapy), a group that underwent psychotherapy and expressive writing, and a third group that underwent psychotherapy and gratitude writing. Within 4-12 weeks after the conclusion of their writing interventions, the participants who underwent psychotherapy and gratitude writing reported significantly better mental health than those in the expressive and control writing intervention groups.
The findings of this study (and others like it) suggest that gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for the healthy, well-adjusted mind, but for individuals who are struggling with mental health concerns.
Gratitude should be a long-term adaptation of your behavior to have the best impact on your physical and mental health.

The Ups and Downs of "What Ifs"
Upward counterfactual thinking happens when we look at a scenario and ask ourselves "what if" in terms of how our life could have turned out better. Examples of upward counterfactual thinking are:
- "I wish I had taken that other job instead of this one 10 years ago my life would be so much better if I had."
- "I wish I would have gotten the part in that high school play, maybe I could have gotten into a theatre school and became an actor..."
Both of these examples have the ideology that if you had made different choices, your life right now would be improved.
Downward counterfactual thinking is, naturally, the opposite of upward counterfactual thinking in that we think about how things could have been worse if other decisions had been made. Examples of downward counterfactual thinking are:
- "I'm so thankful I studied secondary education in university instead of psychology like I had originally planned - I love teaching high school kids and I never would have gotten to do that..."
- "I'm so happy I left David when I got the chance, I can't imagine still being in an unhappy marriage with someone who doesn't support me..."
In these examples, we see the idea that if you had made different choices your life would not be as good as it is right now.
While many people don't see the point in "what if" scenarios, various studies have found that downward counterfactual thinking can be more associated with psychological health compared with upward counterfactual thinking. Not only that, but research has also shown upward counterfactual thinking can be linked with current and future depression.
According to a 2017 study that pooled a sample of over 13,000 respondents, thoughts about "better outcomes" and regret (upward counterfactual thinking) were associated with current and future depression.
In a 2016 research paper submitted to the Department of Psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz, downward counterfactual thinking in regards to romantic relationships was associated with relatively positive relationship outcomes. Interestingly, women were more likely than men to engage in downward counterfactual thinking about their romantic life.

Health & Healing Hack of the Week
Mindful Walking
There's a great mindfulness drill I learned about from Gary Douglas of Access Consciousness, and it is fun to do and very revealing of our motivations and true desires. It is "Mindful Walking". There are different ways to do it, but a good starting one is to first determine a short path you are going to physically walk--say through your garden, or a short stretch of ground in a park--say, maybe 100 feet or so. Now, start walking, step by step, very slowly. As you slowly move, take in every bit of the five senses (or more). Observe the tendency to get bored, or hurry, or do something else with your mind. Instead, retrieve your attention back to the Walk. Observe the earth, the trees, the flowers, the grass, any flora and fauna, your breath, heart beat, pulses and other sensations. I've done this over a 100 foot stretch in a garden, taking 45 minutes to traverse the distance. At the end, I felt not only intimately connected with my surroundings, but also much more connected with Nature at large.
The other version of this is to walk at a normal pace, but keeping your attention on everything you are sensing, and observing what the mind does. Refrain from following any particular thought sequence, such as thinking about future events, or plans, or past experiences. Keep it all in the NOW. Soon, you'll experience a deep, relaxing connection to Life and your place in the world. -- From 25 No Cost Health & Healing Hacks by Boyd Martin)

This Quantum Life by Boyd Martin, Caretaker, Pure Energy Rx
As The Path Unfolds
We've all had moments in life where it seemed an overseeing force, or maybe a being, intervened in what could have been a dangerous, or even fatal event. This intervention seemed to "come out of nowhere" and is forever etched in memory.
One day I was walking home from the shopping center after having my daily cup of coffee. I came to an intersection crosswalk with my eye on the "don't walk" sign, since I was in a bit of a hurry. The sign switched to walk, and I immediately began to step off the curb. Right at that moment, I felt a firm hand on my arm gently pulling me back, just as a city bus whooshed up to the bus stop right in front of me, having ignored the traffic light. I could feel the bus outside rear view mirror sweep past my nose, as it braked. I swung around to see who grabbed my arm, only to see no one there. As I ran the event back through my mind, I realized I had been saved from certain injury, as the bus was going too fast and had overshot the crosswalk.
I've had several other turns of events that felt like interventions, that had events played out without it, there would have been major inconvenience, or outright physical harm.
I've often wondered if the things I've worried about, but never happened, were really memories of times things did go awry, but this time I didn't take that road.
On the flip side, I've also had vague feelings of unease just prior to a major inconvenience or injury, leading me to believe that the body has a sort of built in predictive response around future events. Scientists have shown this to be true in experiments, where physical bodies seem to "sense" danger or intense events up to 10 minutes before they happen, as dramatized in the movie "Star Wars", where Han Solo "has a bad feeling about this".
These kinds of "alarms" can put us into flight-or-fight, riveting our attention into the present moment with senses full on.
After nearly seven decades of life here on the planet's surface, and stepping back for a long view of my life's trajectory, there is a profound sense of "someone looking after me", I've most often attributed to angels, ancestors, or other higher beings. But lately I've been entertaining another option. Maybe it's all just me.
This is not to say angels don't exist (I wrote about one such interaction), but more to say that we exist on many levels, or dimensions, with temporal life down here on 3rd dimensional solid ground being but a small fraction of our experience, much like the human eye only seeing a tiny sliver of the light spectrum.
As infinite spiritual beings, part of us is residing outside of time and space, which could imbue our temporal lives with a sense of being directed by a higher force. As quantum physics is so fond of pointing out, the "arrow of time" theory has been overthrown by the observation that the apparent linearity of time is actually an arbitrary construct of the mind. It seems real only because of acculturation and other social conditioning. And that we perceive a steady march of events from childhood to seniority in order to share our experience with others, and to play success and failure games with the ego.
The unfolding of our physical life experience is the story of how we are being. The "what" of our Self, is reflected in the "who" that is having our experiences.
The choices we make describe the edges of who we are within the field of infinite possibilities. By observing those choices against the backdrop of our innate infinite nature, we see our self-imposed limitations.
In the practice of Access Consciousness, one exercise is to answer the fulfillment of a choice with the statement, "What else is possible?", creating a portal to greater and greater expressions of who we are.
As Alan Watts has famously said, "Deep, deep down, far, far in, you are the universe." And that universe is an ever-expanding field of possibilities, reflecting the infinite nature of what we are.
During this time of extreme social manipulation and control is the perfect moment to remember that field of infinite possibility, answering every limitation with, "What else is possible"? And in so doing, allowing the unfolding of the highest and best of who we have become. In this way, we transform the world into a true reflection of love, compassion, respect, and honor, befitting our highest, grandest, most incredible Self.
To your quantum health,
Boyd Martin
