Gratitude Changes The Brain

There are many studies showing that people who count their blessings tend to be far happier and experience less depression. In one study from the University of California, Berkeley, researchers recruited people with mental health difficulties, including people suffering from anxiety and depression. The study involved nearly 300 adults who were randomly divided into three groups.

All groups received counselling services, but the first group was instructed to write one letter of gratitude to another person every week for three weeks, whereas the second group was asked to write about their deepest thoughts and feelings about negative experiences. The third group did not do any writing activity.

Researchers found that compared to the participants who wrote about negative experiences or only received counselling, those who wrote gratitude letters reported significantly better mental health for up to 12 weeks after the writing exercise ended. This suggests that gratitude writing can be beneficial not just for healthy, well-adjusted individuals, but also for those who struggle with mental health concerns. In fact, it seems, practicing gratitude on top of receiving psychological counseling carries greater benefits than counseling alone, even when that gratitude practice is brief.

Previously, a study on gratitude conducted by Robert A. Emmons, Ph.D. at the University of California, Davis and his colleague Mike McCullough at the University of Miami, randomly assigned participants to be given one of three tasks. Each week, participants kept a short journal. One group described five things they were grateful for that had occurred in the past week, another group recorded daily troubles from the previous week that displeased them, and the neutral group was asked to list five events or circumstances that affected them, but they were not told whether to focus on what they consider positive or the negative. Ten weeks later, participants in the gratitude group felt better about their lives as a whole and were a full 25 percent happier than the troubled group. They reported fewer health complaints and exercised an average of 1.5 hours more.

Researchers from Berkeley identified how gratitude might actually work on our minds and bodies. They provided four insights from their research suggesting what causes the psychological benefits of gratitude.

The brain part is very interesting. The researchers at Berkeley used an fMRI scanner to measure brain activity while people from each group did a "pay it forward" task. During the task, the participants were given money by a "nice person." This person's only request was that they pass on the money to someone if they felt grateful.

Following the Pay It Forward study, participants were asked to rate how grateful they felt toward the person giving them the money and how much they wanted to pay it forward to a charitable cause as well as how guilty they thought they would feel if they didn't help. They were also given questionnaires to measure how grateful they felt in general. Researchers said,

We found that across the participants, when people felt more grateful, their brain activity was distinct from brain activity related to guilt and the desire to help a cause. More specifically, we found that when people who are generally more grateful gave more money to a cause, they showed greater neural sensitivity in the medial prefrontal cortex, a brain area associated with learning and decision making. This suggests that people who are more grateful are also more attentive to how they express gratitude.

Most interestingly, when we compared those who wrote the gratitude letters with those who didn't, the gratitude letter writers showed greater activation in the medial prefrontal cortex when they experienced gratitude in the fMRI scanner. This is striking as this effect was found three months after the letter writing began. This indicates that simply expressing gratitude may have lasting effects on the brain. While not conclusive, this finding suggests that practicing gratitude may help train the brain to be more sensitive to the experience of gratitude down the line, and this could contribute to improved mental health over time. The Happy Hormones: Dopamine and Serotonin

sunbathing Serotonin and dopamine are often referred to as "happy hormones" because they both play a significant role in regulating mood and emotion, according to Sanam Hafeez, Psy.D., a neuropsychologist and director of Comprehend The Mind. Though serotonin and dopamine affect different parts of the brain, they often work in unison (meaning if serotonin levels go down, then dopamine levels go up). "Also, both serotonin and dopamine affect appetite and impulsivity while serotonin typically suppresses hunger, whereas dopamine stimulates it, and serotonin inhibits impulsivity, and dopamine enhances it," she says.

Both serotonin and dopamine are highly affected by sunlight. Alyssa Kirby Horowitz, N.D., a naturopathic doctor, says that 10 to 20% of our serotonin is made in the pineal gland, which is sensitive to sunlight. If daylight is scarce or we're stuck indoors, she says the pineal gland will produce the hormone melanin, which suppresses the production of serotonin, thereby causing our mood to take a nosedive. This explains why we get the blues (or seasonal affective disorder) when it gets dark earlier in the fall and winter. Sunlight also triggers the release of dopamine. Horowitz explains that when exposed to outdoor light, specialized eye cells connect to other cells that release dopamine. Additionally, she says that when your skin absorbs sunlight and produces vitamin D, it creates a cycle that triggers the production of dopamine as well as serotonin.

Finally, they also both play a profound role in digestion. The serotonin made in the gut plays a role in our intestines' ability to contract, signals pain, prompts nausea, and causes other digestive issues, which explains why antidepressants can lead to digestion-related side effects, according to Horowitz. Similarly, she says 50% of our dopamine is made in the gut, and while it sends signals from the brain, it acts as a messenger to help contract the colon muscles. And of course: Food is very much thy medicine. "Our mood affects our nutrition choices just as much as the opposite is true," says Horowitz.

While the two neurotransmitters function in similar ways, they do pose significant differences. Harris-Newton says increased amounts of serotonin hinder impulsive behavior, while dopamine ramps it up. Hafeez adds that in some cases, low serotonin levels can lead to an overproduction of dopamine—this is because serotonin appears to inhibit dopamine production. Because dopamine enhances reward-seeking behavior, she explains impulsivity might indirectly arise from low serotonin.

Speaking of impulsive behavior, drugs activate both dopamine and serotonin in our brains in different ways, according to Hafeez. "When people engage in recreational drug use, serotonin levels increase, which makes people feel very good. This high is the primary reason people continue taking them. They want to experience the high again. However, this fluctuation of serotonin also contributes to the depression and anxiety people feel when going through withdrawal."

Whereas serotonin and drug use elicits euphoria, dopamine and drug use reinforces the reward-seeking behavior, says Hafeez, which increases the likelihood of repeating the activity and as a result, addiction and painful withdrawal symptoms.

Cognitive Improvments with Mindfulness Practices

mindfulness While mindfulness is typically geared towards improving mental health and wellbeing, it may also provide additional benefits to brain health, according to a new systematic review and meta-analysis published in the journal Neuropsychology Review. Mindfulness-based programs primarily target improved mental health and wellbeing.

"The positive effects of mindfulness-based programs on mental health are already relatively well-established," said Tim Whitfield, a Ph.D. student in the Division of Psychiatry at University College London. "Here, our findings suggest that a small benefit is also conferred to cognition, at least among older adults."

Whitfield and colleagues reviewed previously published studies of mindfulness, and identified 45 studies that fit their criteria, which incorporated a total of 2,238 study participants. Each study tested the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention delivered by a facilitator in a group setting, over at least four sessions, while excluding mindfulness retreats in order to have a more homogenous set of studies. The majority of studies involved a certified instructor teaching participants techniques such as sitting meditation, mindful movement and body scan, generally on a weekly basis across six to 12 weeks, while also asking participants to continue the practices in their own time.

The researchers found that overall, mindfulness conferred a small but significant benefit to cognition. Subgroup analysis revealed that the effect was slightly stronger for people over 60, while there was not a significant effect for people under 60. "Executive function is known to decline with age among older adults," Whitfield said. "The improvement in people over 60 suggests that mindfulness may help guard against cognitive decline, by helping to maintain or restore executive function in late adulthood."

When they investigated which aspects of cognition were affected, the scientists found that mindfulness was beneficial only to executive function, and more specifically, there was strong evidence of a small positive effect on working memory. They also analyzed whether mindfulness outperformed other ‘active interventions' — such as brain training, relaxation, or other health or educational programs — or only when compared to people who were not offered any alternative treatment.

"We know mindfulness-based programs benefit mental health, and our paper now suggests that mindfulness may also help to maintain cognitive faculties as people age," said Dr. Natalie Marchant, a researcher in the Division of Psychiatry at University College London.

Life With Benefits

benefits Within that background radiation of Gratitude, there is a mindset I like to call "Life With Benefits". It is a paradigm that embraces the Universal Truth that everything happening to us benefits us.

This is similar to the concept of "Pronoia", where there is a sense that the Universe is working in your favor. There are positive synchronicities and a feeling of "being in the zone".

The conscious mind and its sidekick, the Ego, are usually busy chattering about anything the attention focusses on. This "chatter", or "monkey mind", can be positive or negative, depending on what feelings get triggered with any given thought. For example, you're boxed in during a traffic jam and you're late for an appointment. Feelings of frustration, anxiety and hopelessness are pounced on by the monkey mind: "The timing of this couldn't be worse!"; "This always happens when I'm in a hurry"; or "When are they going to fix this traffic mess!".

And here is the perfect opportunity to enter the Life with Benefits realm. The negative feelings begin welling up, and at that moment a choice is made. Shall I indulge in the feelings and let the monkey mind run rampant? OR... I can let those negative feelings float on past, come into the present moment, feel gratitude for the situation, then begin a positive narrative using the monkey mind: "I needed to slow down today, anyway. This is perfect."; "Good. This gives me some time to review my part in the client meeting when I get there."; or, "It's a beautiful, sunny day to enjoy the scenery!"

All of this serves to walk through the Life-With-Benefits portal to a higher vibration of life experience. The mind chatter reinforces the positive energy of gratitude, and reassures the ego that it is in control and not threatened.

Another deeper version of the Life-With-Benefits protocol, is when a value system is threatened. Triggers are greatly amplified because there are walls upon walls of justifications--reasons why a certain viewpoint is valid and important. When these deep values are violated, it is easy to go into "attack mode" and become a tyrant of righteousness.

The Life With Benefits response is the same as in the traffic jam example, except with greater focus. Before speaking, or allowing the monkey mind to go bonkers, become aware that a value has been threatened. This puts you in the present moment. Now, feel gratitude for the awareness of the threatened value. This opens to door to observing your personal architecture that causes you to be thrown off your center into fight-or-flight mode.

This also creates a space of compassion for the persons or situations that had previous threatened a cherished value. That person or situation was also triggered to attack, but did not have the benefit of taking that crucial pause of mindful gratitude before their monkey mind took over.

Now you've entered the Life With Benefits portal where you can say: "Thank you for revealing my triggers!"; "I understand that you were triggered, too, and that's okay."; or, "We have the common bond of caring deeply about this issue". So now you know where the other person stands, why the situation exists, taking the stress out of future interactions with understanding replacing the stress.

Take a moment to survey your current situation. Zoom in on any unwanted, repeating circumstances that have your monkey mind chattering incessantly over negative feelings. Now run the following process:

1. I am feeling _____.
2. I am feeling _____ because I CHOOSE to.
3. I choose to feel _____ because it serves me to.

This proves to yourself that feelings about current circumstances were by choice, and that those feelings were benefitting you in some way. Naturally, the question pops up, "Now, why the heck do I believe that this serves me? What payoff or benefit am I receiving as a result?"

When negative emotions get triggered, Life With Benefits says it's a good thing. Your emotional structures are revealed, and you wake up to trigger language--or what propagandists call "dog whistles". You have an opportunity to respond in the most constructive and regenerative way, avoiding the stress response of battle.

tyrant In the current atmosphere of tyrannical oppression and draconian social control, it is easy to take up the battle cry of freedom, justifying negative emotions and replacing compassion with attack. Yes, freedom from tyranny is an age-old script, often perpetuated by the tyrants to get us all fighting amongst ourselves and feeding the tyrants with the low-frequency emotions they crave and thrive on. A triggered populace is an easily controlled one. Just make them mad and scared, and they'll do most anything to "get back to normal".

The true freedom from tyranny revolt begins with the choice to disconnect from the polarity inherent in the conflict. The Life With Benefits strategy allows the 40,000-foot view, leading to gratitude for the perception of it. There's a war over there, but I'm over here creating my best life. I don't engage with tyrants, and if I find myself inadvertently caught up in their polarity drama, I can take a mindful pause, and choose the path where I create my own life.

The choice to create overrides any tyranny against freedom. Freedom can only be taken away by permission. The more it is allowed, the tighter the grip. We stop allowing the tyranny by short-circuiting the emotional hooks that draw us in to the war. We simply out-create it. There is always a way to expand freedom in the face of tyranny. And that is what Life With Benefits is all about.
