Smudging Vetted by Science

For a long time, skeptics have argued the practice serves no purpose, as they say it's akin to magic and completely unscientific. And one would think they had a point--until now. The scientific paper entitled "Medicinal Smokes" and published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology focuses a scientific lens on the practice, which is becoming more and more widely practiced despite skepticism.

It was quite the research undertaking because it included information from over 50 countries. The research looked into herbal and non-herbal remedies applied by the burning of various plants. Predominantly, the use of cleansing smoke is used for lung, brain, and skin, and the smoke also doubled as an air purifier. The purpose of the study was to see whether or not these medicinal smoke deliveries could be explored by western medicine, because "The advantages of smoke-based remedies are rapid delivery to the brain, more efficient absorption by the body and lower costs of production."

A follow-up paper published by the same periodical PubMed showed that in addition to health benefits smudging was a powerful antiseptic.

"We have observed that 1h treatment of medicinal smoke emanated by burning wood and a mixture of odoriferous and medicinal herbs, on aerial bacterial population caused over 94% reduction of bacterial counts by 60 min and the ability of the smoke to purify or disinfect the air and to make the environment cleaner was maintained up to 24h in the closed room. Absence of pathogenic bacteria in the open room even after 30 days is indicative of the bactericidal potential of the medicinal smoke treatment. We have demonstrated that using medicinal smoke it is possible to completely eliminate diverse plant and human pathogenic bacteria of the air within confined space."

The usual ways of disinfecting air in a hospital uses harsh chemicals for patients who're already receiving large amounts of processed drugs. It makes an already unpleasant experience that much more harsh. Smudging is a safe, effective, alternative that does a fantastic job of keeping airborne bacteria cleared, and has the added benefit of being natural and safe to use.

Lots of natural remedies like this may be overlooked, simply because skeptics refuse to believe they could work. But having a biased like that could be preventing us from making discoveries that propel us forward in science; after all, just because it's an ancient custom doesn't mean it's primitive.

Is the Universe Actually Infinite?

infinity Does the universe keep extending endlessly into the abyss of space, or does it have a defined end? Scientists have proposed both possibilities, and each has its own supporters and detractors. Determining whether the universe has some kind of boundary ultimately depends on figuring out its shape, size, and how much of it we can actually observe.

The shape of the universe would have a lot to do with its size. Cosmologists have theorized that a universe would likely come in one of three possible shapes, which are dependent on the curvature of space. As described in Discover Magazine, the universe could be flat, having no curvature, but spatially infinite. Or it could be open, shaped like a saddle (with negative curvature) and also infinite. Or it could be closed, look like a sphere, and be spatially finite.

So which shape really is it? Nobel Prize-winning cosmologist John Mather of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, also the chief scientist for the James Webb Space Telescope, maintains that recent observations of cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) remaining from the time of the Big Bang support the idea of the universe being flat, without any curvature (at least to the limit of what is observable).

Consider this: The age of the universe is 13.8 billion years, which means it took 13.8 billion light-years for the light from the farthest edge of the observable universe to reach us. But in that time, the universe has continued to expand at a rate that appears to be speeding up. Now, the edge of the observable universe has moved and is 46.5 billion light-years away. That vast amount of space includes anywhere from 200 billion to 2 trillion galaxies, according to varying estimates. And each galaxy has, on average, around a 100 billions stars.

One study from a group of UK scientists estimated that if you take that into account, the actual size of the universe could be at least 250 times larger. They found that if you refer to space in terms of a so-called Hubble volume, which is similar to the volume of space in the visible universe, a closed and finite universe would contain roughly 250 to 400 Hubble volumes. Whether we have a finite universe or an infinite universe like an ever-expanding bubble, does it still have an "edge"? Is there some place you can go and say, "Yep, this is the end of the universe"? The simple answer is likely no.

If that is so, then the universe is much like the surface of a balloon. Imagine being an ant walking along a balloon. You wouldn't know there's an edge to it if you kept walking forward. You'd likely come back to where you started eventually, but the journey around and around could keep going without end. If someone were to blow more air into the balloon as you keep walking along it, you'd experience some parts of the balloon moving farther away from you. Still, you'd be no closer to finding the balloon's edge. Much like the ants, we're unlikely to get to the end of the universe. But we may still be able to answer one day "is the universe infinite" or does it have an actual boundary?

6 Steps to Contentment Regardless of Circumstances

We confuse contentment with happiness and joy, but contentment is not tied to emotions. It has nothing to do with the ego and its desires or disappointments. Contentment is a deep sense of peace and satisfaction. It's an equilibrium that is not knocked off-kilter by the vagaries of life. Contentment, initially, may be ephemeral, especially when we're buffeted by the winds of change or difficult circumstances. But we can develop contentment.

1. Start small - Build contentment muscles by practicing on the small upsets, interruptions, and distractions of life. Pause, take a breath, and let go. Allow what is. Don't dwell on what could be or should be because what could or should be is clearly not happening at that moment. Swimming against the tide is a sure way to drown.

2. Practice surrender - Surrender does not mean giving up. It's having faith and trusting that everything happens for our soul's highest and best good. It's believing that we don't have all the answers while trusting that a Higher Power has our back. It's relinquishing the illusion of control. We don't have control anyway, so why pretend that we do?

3. Practice non-attachment - Accept the reality of the moment, what is real here and now. We relinquish the results of our efforts. It doesn't mean we don't care or try our best. It means we accept whatever happens, knowing that we did try our best. We don't get upset because things didn't turn out the way we envisioned. We "respect the reality of the moment", let go, and move on.

4. Practice equanimity - Equanimity allows us to roll with the tides. Life is not static and would be pretty boring if it was. The one constant about life is that change happens. Every day brings changes, surprises, and a need for adaptability. The result can be stress, confusion, irritability, impatience, and a sense of life out of control.

5. Practice gratitude - Gratitude helps us to see the positives in our life. We count our blessings and give thanks and, in doing so, we experience gratitude. Focus on what you have to be grateful for, not on what you feel is missing from your life. One way to experience gratitude is through service and helping others.

6. Be internally focused - Look within for true contentment. Contentment is an inside job. It's not dependent on externals. It's not dependent on having a certain car, or a bigger house, or a high-powered job. Those things may bring you happiness and maybe they'll just bring you stress, but they're not what causes contentment.

The Fortress of Silence

silence Two and a half years ago I made the life-changing decision to move to the town of my birth out in Kansas. I was living in the San Diego Area, and although it was outwardly relatively calm, the mental noise and emotional chaos caused by my continually upended living circumstances got me longing for some peace and equanimity.

I arrived back in this small, humble railroad town 66 years after my birth, and 40-some years after my last visit. It was December, and the season brought back memories of past Kansas winters, which are relatively mild compared to just a few hundred miles north. The main thing I recalled were the smells--a combination of railroad tie oil, elm trees, hay, and cornstalks. But, I gratefully acknowledged a type of rural silence that I had been longing for--away from the constant low-level thrumming of thousands of cars and jet engines, the buzzing of power lines and wi-fi, and the all-encompassing noisy mental environment, that, as an empath, was constantly putting me on edge.

After a couple of months in my new digs, I was finally able to relax and lean back into The Silence. Now, this isn't the "silence" of the absence of sound waves--it's the silence of the heart, where thinking stops and feeling begins. It is the silence of awe, as if God is leaning up against me with the profound peace that emanates from the absence of doing and having--where being is all there is and all there needs to be.

When I had just started a Bikram (hot yoga) practice several years ago (probably the most difficult thing I've ever attempted), I was awash with thoughts and feelings as I forced my way through the poses. I would cry out with effort, basically being a distraction to the whole class. One day, after a particularly grueling class, the instructor sauntered over to me and said, "We all know how hard you've been working." She gave me one of those ironic half-blinks that said, "Please be quiet during class", and I nodded sheepishly.

I then committed to a silent practice, keeping all the "ughs", "ahs", and "ouches" to myself. After some weeks, about half way through the asanas, the instructor sidled up to me, looked me straight in the eye and placed her finger over her lips, "Shhhhh". At first I thought she was making a joke, but then I realized how noisy the inside of my head had been since beginning the whole yoga thing. In fact, it was noisy enough to be mentally audible to others, introducing me to the world of mental silence--the world of contemplation, non-action, and Zen.

Around this same time, I discovered "Heart Coherence" from the HeartMath Institute. This is where you "drop down" into your heart space, and breathe from there. This has the effect of exiting from the monkey-mind chatter, and entering the fortress of solitude of being. It is the land of intuition, awareness and pure consciousness--where God is always. It is the "true brain", the real source of intelligence about the physical realm.

In these chaotic days of mental, emotional and spiritual warfare, it has become a vital part of human health to seek out and find that "fortress of solitude" within each of us, where we can lean into the Great Silence of Divine Presence, and find that rock of equipoise that keeps us centered in the transcendence of the mundane. It is that merciful place in all hearts where there is unconditional forgiveness, all-encompassing love, and inspiring awe for the process of becoming our Greater Self.

The current great war is for our souls, and we lose that war to the degree we allow ourselves to be shut out of our own hearts. The broadcast of emotional polarities and cognitive dissonance traps us in a morass of inner chatter, emotional conundrums and outer conflict, weaponizing our own socialization and common sense against us.

The Way Out is simply dropping down into the heartspace to experience the silence of Divine Equipoise, spiritual connection and the direct experience of God. The meme of the time is "God is all of us", but it can only be felt in the heart.

The heart is the agent of order, harmony and Cosmic Love, and is immediately available to anyone who can wake up long enough to regain their situational awareness and embrace it. This is where the Controllers are waging their war--knocking us off our basic instincts to love, connect and simply be. By entering into The Silence of Being, we defeat the agents of control and destruction, leaving them to scurry back under their rocks of deceit and obfuscation, terrified of their own reflection in our infinite mirror of pure being.

The Silence is where freedom lives--where the unconquerable power of love and connection to all beings ushers us into a grand new world of sovereignty, creativity and service. It is the gateway to who we truly are: immortal, indestructible, conscious points of light. We come in peace to create peace. We come in love to create a world of love, and we come into ourselves to be the greatest of who we are.
