Science Explains Intuition

intuition

So, what exactly is intuition? A good way to describe it is a gut feeling, a sense, or a feeling about something. It's arriving to some sort of truth about something, an event or experience without using any type of analytic reasoning. Intuition has been measured, which is why the US Office of Naval Research (ONR) admitted to developing methods to develop and measure this phenomenon for their soldiers.

We have to understand what gives rise to this so-called "sixth sense", says Peter Squire, a program officer in ONR's Expeditionary Maneuver Warfare and Combating Terrorism department. Today's Navy scientists place less emphasis on trying to understand the phenomena theoretically and more on using technology to examine the mysterious process, which Navy scientists assure the public is not based on superstition. "If the researchers understand the process, there may be ways to accelerate it — and possibly spread the powers of intuition throughout military units," says Dr. Squire. The Pentagon's focus is to maximize the power of the sixth sense for operational use.

The body is truly an amazing puzzle, and we probably haven't moved beyond the tip of the iceberg when it comes to discovering what we are actually capable of. For example, a study (meta analysis) in the journal Frontiers in Human Neuroscience titled "Predicting the unpredictable: critical analysis and practical implications of predictive anticipatory activity" examined a number of experiments regarding precognition. These experiments indicate that the human body can actually detect randomly delivered stimuli that occur 1-10 seconds in advance. In other words, the human body seems to know of an event and reacts to an event that has yet to occur. What occurs in the human body before these events are physiological changes that are measured in the cardiopulmonary, the skin, and the nervous system.

The Institute of HeartMath alongside Radin conducted an interesting experiment a few years ago. They explain, "Twenty-six adults experienced in using HeartMath techniques and who could sustain a heart-coherent state completed two rounds of study protocols approximately two weeks apart. Half of the participants completed the protocols after they intentionally achieved a heart-coherent state for 10 minutes. The other half completed the same procedures without first achieving heart coherence. Then they reversed the process for the second round of monitoring, with the first group not becoming heart-coherent before completing the protocols and the second group becoming heart-coherent before. The point was to test whether heart coherence affected the results of the experiment."

Participants were told the study's purpose was to test stress reactions and were unaware of its actual purpose. (This practice meets institutional-review-board standards.) Each participant sat at a computer and was instructed to click a mouse when ready to begin. The screen stayed blank for six seconds. The participant's physiological data was recorded by a special software program, and then, one by one, a series of 45 pictures was displayed on the screen. Each picture, displayed for 3 seconds, evoked either a strong emotional reaction or a calm state. After each picture, the screen went blank for 10 seconds. Participants repeated this process for all 45 pictures, 30 of which were known to evoke a calm response and 15 a strong emotional response.

The results of the experiment were fascinating to say the least. The participants' brains and hearts responded to information about the emotional quality of the pictures before the computer flashed them (random selection). This means that the heart and brain were both responding to future events. The results indicated that the responses happened, on average, 4.8 seconds before the computer selected the pictures. Even more profound, perhaps, was data showing the heart received information before the brain. "It is first registered from the heart," Rollin McCraty Ph.D. explained, "then up to the brain (emotional and pre-frontal cortex), where we can logically relate what we are intuiting, then finally down to the gut (or where something stirs)."

Using Sound for a Sound Mind
sound

Psychoacoustics is the scientific study of the perception of sound, and it has fueled researchers paths to better understand how it can be used as medicine. For instance, in 1973, Dr. Gerald Oster, a medical doctor and biophysicist, proved, in his research paper, "Auditory Beats in the Brain"--how sound affects how the brain absorbs new information, controls mood, sleep patterns, healing responses, and more, and how quickly. Thus, specific frequencies of sound and music can be used to generate neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

According to Dr. Suzanne Evans Morris, Ph.D., a speech-language pathologist: "Research shows that different frequencies presented to each ear through stereo headphones create a difference tone (or binaural beat) as the brain puts together the two tones it actually hears. Through EEG monitoring the difference tone is identified by a change in the electrical pattern produced by the brain. For example, frequencies of 200 Hz and 210 Hz produce a binaural beat frequency of 10 Hz (The difference in 210 Hz and 200 Hz is 10 Hz). Monitoring of the brain's electricity (EEG) shows that the brain produces increased 10 Hz activity with equal frequency and amplitude of the wave form in both hemispheres of the brain (left and right hemisphere)."

A series of experiments conducted by neuro-electric therapy engineer Dr. Margaret Patterson and Dr. Ifor Capel, revealed how alpha brainwaves boosted the production of serotonin. Dr. Capel explained: "As far as we can tell, each brain center generates impulses at a specific frequency based on the predominant neurotransmitter it secretes. In other words, the brain's internal communication system--its language, is based on frequency… Presumably, when we send in waves of electrical energy at, say, 10 Hz, certain cells in the lower brain stem will respond because they normally fire within that frequency range."

If your mental health is of concern, try listening to a binaural beat to generate alpha waves between 8 and 14 Hz to produce more serotonin. Another option is to take advantage of music that promotes a relaxed alpha state in the brain such as classical music.

Snapping Back After Trauma

superman Neurophysiologist Robert Keith Wallace, PhD, says that to deal with an increasingly stressed world what is needed is a highly adaptable nervous system to prevent repeated activation of the body's "threat network" from adversely affecting health. Dr. Wallace says that "neuroadaptability" is necessary to overcome stress. Wallace, Chairman of the Department of Physiology and Health at Maharishi International University in Iowa, says, "When individuals face stressful encounters, including the increasing number of toxins and viruses in the environment, their bodies are challenged at the DNA level and throughout the nervous system." This, he says, "requires the body to respond appropriately to these challenges but then it needs to return to a balanced or coherent state."

Many people, however, don't have nervous systems that return to a balanced state after being challenged. One analogy Wallace uses is to think of the effect of stress on some nervous systems as like drawing a line in concrete before it hardens. In those situations, he says, the stressful events leave a lasting mark. He compares this to a more adaptable nervous system, which he says is "like drawing a line in water where there is no lasting impression."

His article cites earlier research to show that "Transcendental Meditation leads to a more effective ability to meet the challenges of stressful situations without harming the body." Wallace says, "Part of the cause of the grudges people hold onto and the traumatic experiences they can't get over are due to the inadaptability of their nervous systems. Without good neuroadaptability, experiences leave a deep mark like drawing that line in concrete."

A complementary approach Wallace refers to in his Medicina article is Ayurveda, an ancient medical science becoming popular today. Ayurveda and yoga are derived from the same body of knowledge (the Vedic literature of India), and many yoga enthusiasts also follow the Ayurveda diet and lifestyle guidelines. These guidelines are different for different people, which Wallace says fits well with integrative medicine's recognition that health approaches need to be "personalized." Wallace says, "Just as not all medicines are right for all people, food and exercise routines also need to vary based on the mind-body type of the individual as classified by the Ayurvedic system."

QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Our Formula E-1 "resets" the parasympathetic nervous system after a trauma, or fight-or-fight response. This de-stresses all body systems, harmonizing and normalizing responses to the environment.

Health & Healing Hack of the Week

Gratitude

gratitude Gratitude is almost as basic as mindfulness, and can be included alongside a mindfulness practice. For example, when a negative thought or feeling comes up, feel gratitude that progress is being made, and that those negative thoughts and feelings will never again affect the body and your experience of life. Many scientific studies have been made on gratitude, demonstrating remarkable changes in body chemistry, endorphin release, speed of healing, increase in immune function, and many other beneficial effects. Gratitude as a practice by itself creates a very healing field of consciousness, and is a pre-requisite to gaining mastery over the mind and body. .-- From 25 No Cost Health & Healing Hacks by Boyd Martin)

Act From Inspiration

inspiration Growing up, my granddad on my dad's side was an Irish immigrant, the president of a small Mid-western university, with a Divinity Degree and PhD. in Education. He always seemed to make it a point to ask me about what I was thinking, and then usually had something clever to say about it, or he would point out a book in his library to lend me. He was fascinating to me because he let me see his mystical side--I've always said Granddad was a Christian Mystic. I usually assumed our little talks about leprechauns and angels were aimed at my childhood imagination, but even into my 20s, he would insist on his belief in the "Little People": "I've seen them. They do exist," he would declare with a completely straight face.

In my senior year of high school, I was having a particularly difficult time emotionally, struggling with frequent bouts of depression and angst about the world, and Granddad was a willing confidant. One day of more than usual existential angst, I asked him, "What is the main thing you've learned about life? What keeps you going all these years?"

He paused, smiled and said, "I never make any decisions when I'm afraid. And I try to do things only out of inspiration--not out of fear."

As I went on to embark on my adult life, those words would echo back to me when I ended up in a unwanted situation, or was feeling down--even for no apparent reason. Every time, I would realize that I had been doing my life--making decision--only to alleviate some fear. At one point, I was pretty sure I never knew what "inspiration" really meant. After all, aren't we all just trying to survive--just trying to keep from being homeless, from starving, or from getting sick?

At some point, I think maybe in my forties, I was sitting on a park bench watching a woman throwing bird seed. Several pigeons and a few crows arrived to devour the easy treats. Suddenly, a raven caught my eye maybe 100 feet above the activity, and he began a dive. Just before he landed, he did a fast belly roll, like a stunt pilot, and then quickly hopped to the ground. He stood there for a few seconds, and I could have sworn he was waiting for applause. He then slowly sauntered over to the where the seeds were scattered on the ground, and began to peck away.

I thought, "What if that bird had decided to land out of inspiration, rather then out of fear of starvation? What if he was inspired to do the belly roll in front of an audience, and the eating part was non-essential?"

After that little demonstration from Mother Nature, I spent the next little while noticing how most of my decisions about "what to do next" were based on perceived existential threats: "I'd better fix that taillight, or I'm gonna get a ticket"; or, "I'd better call that client, or they're going to forget about me"; or, "I'd better go to bed, or I won't be any good tomorrow"; and on and on.

Shortly, I realized that most of that kind of thinking was the result of having procrastinated after an inspiration. When I noticed the taillight was out, I was inspired to go to the auto parts store, since I was also looking for new stereo speakers, and maybe look around for anything else. Or, hey, I wonder what's going on with Sally? I'm gonna call her and see if she's still interested in getting her computer upgraded. Or, I'm sleepy--it'll feel good going to bed right now. I just hardly ever did that, instead procrastinating until circumstances required action to avert an inconvenience or outright disaster.

Since those days, I've come to see inspiration as Divine Will. It's god pointing the way to happiness and fulfillment. More than that, acting from inspiration helps to navigate away from victimizing circumstances. Acting from a space of fear and trepidation may seem to steer us away from danger, but does nothing to keep the same situation from recurring.

I've come to believe that every inspiration to action, if followed, brings us closer and closer to our highest life. It's that life filled with love, fun, and creativity--a life of harmony, security and freedom from worry. After all, the Universe itself sprang from inspiration--the promise of a magnificent game--a sensual existence of fulfillment and love. Inspiration is the fuel that keeps everything going. It is fear that leads to chaos and suffering, and acting from that space only guarantees entrapment in our own special hell.

As always, it boils down to choosing to live in inspiration. It's making the decision to act when inspired, and not giving in to the depravity of procrastination, as there will be no better time than NOW to act on that inspiration. The ironic thing about this is that even in the grips of procrastination, it only takes a quick trip back on the timeline to spot the original inspiration, and then from that point, act. That way, we can stay on course and live our highest life in this magnificent creation of love, joy and happiness.
