Garden compost mound, anticipating a great growing season!
|
Hello Everyone,
Six more weeks till spring (the groundhog saw his shadow here in Oregon)... Can you believe it! Included are photos of the yard process, greatly transformed from our last newsletter. One very large dump truck loaded with leaves, branches, fir needles, cones and grass and we have something close to resembling what generally is our yard.
The vegetable garden is filled with leaves currently. We will be composting it down as the winter progresses and keep you apprised of what we learn around amending the soil for the biggest and most flavorful produce for the approaching summer.
Last month I shared the benefits of eating 100% organic extra virgin coconut oil, well guess what? Keeping it as close to nature is always the best, and coconut oil is fabulous for the skin topically. After reviewing Dr. Mercola's recommendation, over the past week I have been using the oil daily, and you know, he is right. Try it, treat your dry skin from the inside and out with Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil. Think it could be too oily? I was surprised, within 10 minutes the oil has penetrated well enough to throw on clothes and start up the day. As for consuming the two tablespoons a day, I'm still doing it--in the morning in my smoothie, and in the evening on steamed veggies, yum. It's a great addition to the wellness planner.
Hydrogen Peroxide, 3% food grade--you can find it at www.rawfood.com. We're currently using it as mouthwash after brushing with our new and fabulous tooth gel from Nature's Sunshine. Hydrogen Peroxid is great for clearing stale office and car air. Keep it handy as you navigate through the day. Works well as a facial spritzer combined with your favor essential oil, very refreshing.
And lastly, try a couple of drops of peppermint essential oil in your water. Tired of that sour taste in your mouth mid-afternoon? Looking for something to spice up your water without adding calories? What about your indigestion? Peppermint essential oil will really add to your water experience--we seem to drink more, and have a fresh breath to boot. Just try it and let me know what you think!
That's it for now... Here's to future experiences of vibrant living shared between us, as people interested in living each day in a special way, living younger, longer, and close to Nature, as Nature intended.
In vibrant health,

Who is your best buddy?...
Our resident Life Coach and Synergy Specialist, Charly Emery, asks this month's question: "Did you know that one of the fastest ways to enhance the quality of your relationships is to improve the one you have with yourself?" Although sometimes we may seek relationships that make us seem lovable to ourselves, without that first love of self, those relationships cannot last as loving ones. Says Charly, "When it comes to relationships, the connection we have with ourselves often dictates what kinds of friendships, business associates and romantic partners we will attract. Everything you create begins with you." >>>> MORE

Light up those SAD days...
It's not called the "dead of winter" for nothing... Dreary grey skies. Miserable wet weather. Snow. Bone-chilling wind. Nothing seems fully alive in the winter--maybe even you. And there's a scientific reason for that. Your brain's pineal gland secrets the hormone melatonin, sometimes called the "hibernation hormone". And when sunlight decreases in the winter, your melatonin levels rise. Of course, you don't hibernate like the bears do--even if you may feel like crawling into a cave for a nice, long nap... Still, with decreased sun exposure, your serotonin level falls. And since serotonin is the brain hormone associated with mood elevation, it's easy to understand why you may not be feeling at your best.
As many as 25 million Americans suffer from a condition known as the "winter blues"--or the "blahs" as many call them. Some folks endure an even more serious malady known as SAD or seasonal affective disorder. Studies have linked both the winter blues and SAD to a lack of sunlight - and decreased serotonin. Like many people, you may experience cabin fever during the winter months. Or, you may tend to eat more or sleep more when the temperature drops. But seasonal affective disorder (SAD) goes well beyond those symptoms. Seasonal affective disorder is much more than the winter blahs. It's a type of depressive disorder.
If you have Seasonal Affective Disorder, winter's short days and long nights may induce feelings of depression, lethargy, fatigue, cravings for sweets and starches, headaches, sleep problems and irritability. Though seasonal affective disorder commonly begins in young adulthood, it's uncommon in people younger than 20. It's more common in women.
The most obvious answer is to get more sunlight. Most of our lifestyles don't support that sunny Caribbean retreat, so the next best thing is full-spectrum lighting. There are several types of light bulbs and lighting systems for this, all mimicing the light spectrum of the sun. Exposure to these light frequencies can help to increase the production of serotonin in the brain, which in turn can reverse the symptoms of those winter blues.
Smoothing out those rough days...
Beyond the possibility of S.A.D., we've all had those rough days that can occur ANY time of the year. It seems the more we resist them, the worse they get. Here are some ways to pull yourself out of the "rough rut" when you're having a "bad day"...
1. After a long hard day one of the best stress relievers is exercise. Get out there and sweat it out. It will release much-needed endorphins and help lift your spirit.
2. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. This helps you gain focus.
3. Sing. Sing loud; sing hard, and rock out. This is a great way to scream away your frustrations.
4. Treat yourself to a massage or some form of pampering after your rough day.
5. Read inspirational quotes and sayings.
6. Call a friend and ask if they would like to talk and walk. Talking and walking are two of the best ways to get it all out.
7. Go out of your way to help someone in need. This helps bring your life back into perspective and reminds you about the things going right in your life--instead of the things going wrong.
Exercise reduces cancers...
A report released last month from the Mayo Clinic College revealed that a study begun 2003 found those with the highest physical activity levels had a 14 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer than those who got low levels of exercise. The study looked at more than 36,000 women aged 55 to 69. Although an assumed connection between increasing estrogen in post-menopausal women and exercise and to reduced body fat is still not clear, exercise definitely plays a role in reducing breast cancers.
The report also stated "Further studies are needed to confirm these novel findings, and to evaluate similar relationships among premenopausal women, if found to be causally related to breast cancer, physical activity would have a substantial public health effect on the prevention of this disease, along with its other positive health benefits."
Another unrelated study published in the same journal stated that people who slim down by cutting calories may also be losing bone density--something that does not happen if weight loss comes through exercise. The study, carried out by doctors from the Washington School of Medicine, looked at 48 adults involved variously in weight loss by caloric restrictions or exercise.
With bone loss possibly leading to fractures and osteoporosis later in life, the second study stated that "A common explanation given for the bone loss induced by weight loss is reduction in mechanical stress on the weight-bearing skeleton (the hip and spine)." When muscles pull on bones during exercise, it is thought to produce strains in the skeleton that stimulate new bone production. Hence, exercise may be responsible for triggering the body into producing new bone mass. The Washington study went on to say "These findings have important implications in designing an appropriate weight-loss therapy program in middle-aged adults, particularly in the subset of patients who may already be at increased risk for bone fracture."
Science declares the happiest man in the world...
To scientists, he is the world's happiest man. His level of mind control is astonishing and the upbeat impulses in his brain are off the scale. Now Matthieu Ricard, 60, a French academic-turned-Buddhist monk, is to share his secrets to make the world a happier place. The trick, he reckons, is to put some effort into it. In essence, happiness is a "skill" to be learned.
Mr. Ricard, who is the French interpreter for Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, took part in trials to show that brain training in the form of meditation can cause an overwhelming change in levels of happiness. MRI scans showed that he and other long-term meditators--who had completed more than 10,000 hours each--experienced a huge level of "positive emotions" in the left pre-frontal cortex of the brain, which is associated with happiness. The right-hand side, which handles negative thoughts, is suppressed. Further studies have shown that even novices who have done only a little meditation have increased levels of happiness. But Mr Ricard's abilities were head and shoulders above the others involved in the trials.
"The mind is malleable," Mr. Ricard says. "Our life can be greatly transformed by even a minimal change in how we
manage our thoughts and perceive and interpret the world. Happiness is a skill. It requires effort and time."
Mr Ricard was brought up among Paris's intellectual elite in the 1960s, but after working for a PhD in biochemsitry he abandoned his distinguished academic career to study Tibetan Buddhism in the Himalayas. A book of philosophical conversations he conducted with his father Jean-François Revel, The Monk and the Philosopher, became an unlikely publishing phenomenon when it came out in France in the late 1990s. Ricard newest book, Happiness is now in print.
Folic acid for yer noggin...
Absent-mindedness in the over-50s is significantly improved when people take folic acid supplements, according to a large study reported recently in Lancet magazine. Short-term memory, mental agility and verbal fluency tests were all better among people who took high doses of the supplement for three years, compared with a group given a placebo. The U.K. Food Standards Agency said it would consider the new evidence as part of its ongoing consultation on the widespread addition of folic acid in flour. Only women planning to conceive are currently advised to take folic acid, to decrease the chances of their baby being born with a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida.
Swiss researchers recruited 818 people who had high concentrations in their blood of homocysteines, amino acids which are believed to be an indicator of a poor cognitive performance as well as an increased risk of dementia and cardiovascular illnesses. Folic acid lowers homocysteine levels and is essential for cell development. Half were given 800 microgrammes of folic acid a day--the equivalent of 2½ lbs. of strawberries--and double the amount recommended for pregnant women. The other half were given placebos. Those who took the supplement performed significantly better in mental agility and memory tests compared with those given the placebo.
Jane Durga, the study leader at the Nestlé Research Centre in Lausanne, Switzerland, said: "There is epidemiogical evidence that people with low folate levels have an increased risk of a variety of illnesses including cardiovascular illnesses and dementia. This is the first large-scale study which shows folic acid improves memory and speed related mental agility in older people."
Age Concern's director general, Gordon Lishman, said: "It is clear that further research is needed to try to reach a more definitive answer on the benefits, or not, of folic acid supplementation and more generally the introduction of folic acid into flour, which was recently recommended by the FSA."
