The Psychologies of Oneness
"In our quest for happiness and the avoidance of suffering, we are all fundamentally the same, and therefore equal. Despite the characteristics that differentiate us - race, language, religion, gender, wealth and many others - we are all equal in terms of our basic humanity." — Dalai Lama (on twitter)
The belief that everything in the universe is part of the same fundamental whole exists throughout many cultures and philosophical, religious, spiritual, and scientific traditions, as captured by the phrase 'all that is.' The Nobel winner Erwin Schrodinger once observed that quantum physics is compatible with the notion that there is indeed a basic oneness of the universe. Therefore, despite it seeming as though the world is full of many divisions, many people throughout the course of human history and even today truly believe that individual things are part of some fundamental entity.
Despite the prevalence of this belief, there has been a lack of a well validated measure in psychology that captures this belief. While certain measures of spirituality do exist, the belief in oneness questions are typically combined with other questions that assess other aspects of spirituality, such as meaning, purpose, sacredness, or having a relationship with God. What happens when we secularize the belief in oneness?
In a series of studies, Kate Diebels and Mark Leary set out to find out. In their first study, they found that only 20.3% of participants had thought about the oneness of all things "often" or "many times", while 25.9% of people "seldom" thought about the oneness of all things, and 12.5% of people "never" had thought about it.
The researchers also created a 6-item "Belief in Oneness Scale" consisting of the following items:
- Beyond surface appearances, everything is fundamentally one.
- Although many seemingly separate things exist, they all are part of the same whole.
- At the most basic level of reality, everything is one.
- The separation among individual things is an illusion; in reality everything is one.
- Everything is composed of the same basic substance, whether one thinks of it as spirit, consciousness, quantum processes, or whatever.
- The same basic essence permeates everything that exists.
Those who scored higher on this scale were much more likely to have an identity that extends beyond the individual to encompass wider aspects of humankind, life, nature, and even the cosmos. In fact, a belief in oneness was more strongly related to feeling connected with distant people and aspects of the natural world than with people with whom one is close! Also, while a belief in oneness was related to actual experiences of oneness ("mystical experiences"), there was no relationship between a belief in oneness and feeling closer to God during a spiritual experience.
In their second study, the researchers looked at values and self-views that might be related to the belief in oneness. They found that a belief in oneness was related to values indicating a universal concern for the welfare of other people, as well as greater compassion for other people. A belief in oneness was also associated with feeling connected to others through a recognition of our common humanity, common problems, and common imperfections. At the same time, there was no relationship between a belief in oneness and the degree to which people endorsed self-focused values such as hedonism, self-direction, security, or achievement. This means that people can have a belief in oneness and still have a great deal of self-care, healthy boundaries, and self-direction in life.
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Quantum physics has shown that the universe is holographic--that is, all parts are represented within every part. Use our Meditation Elixirs to help subjectively experience this reality to increase a sense of oneness.

Why Does Time Only Seem To Flow Forward?
Place one clock at the top of a mountain. Place another on the beach. Eventually, you'll see that each clock tells a different time. Why? Time moves slower as you get closer to Earth, because, as Einstein posited in his theory of general relativity, the gravity of a large mass, like Earth, warps the space and time around it. Scientists first observed this "time dilation" effect on the cosmic scale, such as when a star passes near a black hole. Then, in 2010, researchers observed the same effect on a much smaller scale, using two extremely precise atomic clocks, one placed 33 centimeters higher than the other. Again, time moved slower for the clock closer to Earth. The differences were tiny, but the implications were massive: absolute time does not exist. For each clock in the world, and for each of us, time passes slightly differently. But even if time is passing at ever-fluctuating speeds throughout the universe, time is still passing in some kind of objective sense, right? Maybe not.
In his book "The Order of Time," Italian theoretical physicist Carlo Rovelli suggests that our perception of time — our sense that time is forever flowing forward--could be a highly subjective projection. After all, when you look at reality on the smallest scale (using equations of quantum gravity, at least), time vanishes. "If I observe the microscopic state of things," writes Rovelli, "then the difference between past and future vanishes … in the elementary grammar of things, there is no distinction between 'cause' and 'effect.'"
So, why do we perceive time as flowing forward? Rovelli notes that, although time disappears on extremely small scales, we still obviously perceive events occur sequentially in reality. In other words, we observe entropy: Order changing into disorder; an egg cracking and getting scrambled.
Rovelli says key aspects of time are described by the second law of thermodynamics, which states that heat always passes from hot to cold. This is a one-way street. For example, an ice cube melts into a hot cup of tea, never the reverse. Rovelli suggests a similar phenomenon might explain why we're only able to perceive the past and not the future.
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: We often experience repeating patterns in our life because of unresolved issues in our past, making time seem to flow away from trauma. Meditation in stillness can interrupt this flow and allow us to free up energy from trauma, freeing us from those repeating patterns. Use our Selenite Meditation Stone to help focus and release.

Star Trek Transporter Looking More and More Feasible
Giant molecules can be in two places at once, thanks to quantum physics. That's something that scientists have long known is theoretically true based on a few facts: Every particle or group of particles in the universe is also a wave--even large particles, even bacteria, even human beings, even planets and stars. And waves occupy multiple places in space at once. So any chunk of matter can also occupy two places at once. Physicists call this phenomenon "quantum superposition," and for decades, they have demonstrated it using small particles.
But in recent years, physicists have scaled up their experiments, demonstrating quantum superposition using larger and larger particles. Now, in a paper published Sept. 23 in the journal Nature Physics, an international team of researchers has caused molecule made up of up to 2,000 atoms to occupy two places at the same time.
Researchers had long known that light, fired through a sheet with two slits in it, would create an interference pattern, or a series of light and dark fringes, on the wall behind the sheet. But light was understood as a massless wave, not something made of particles, so this wasn't surprising. However, in a series of famous experiments in the 1920s, physicists showed that electrons fired through thin films or crystals would behave in a similar way, forming patterns like light does on the wall behind the diffracting material.
To pull off the double-slit experiment for big things, the researchers built a machine that could fire a beam of molecules (hulking things called "oligo-tetraphenylporphyrins enriched with fluoroalkylsulfanyl chains," some more than 25,000 times the mass of a simple hydrogen atom) through a series of grates and sheets bearing multiple slits. The beam was about 6.5 feet (2 meters) long. That's big enough that the researchers had to account for factors like gravity and the rotation of the Earth in designing the beam emitter, the scientists wrote in the paper. They also kept the molecules fairly warm for a quantum physics experiment, so they had to account for heat jostling the particles.
But still, when the researchers switched the machine on, the detectors at the far end of the beam revealed an interference pattern. The molecules were occupying multiple points in space at once. It's an exciting result, the researchers wrote, proving quantum interference at larger scales than had ever before been detected.

Health & Healing Hack of the Week
Light Infusions
A key point to understand about most of these hacks is that the imagination is your interface with the physical world. We have been taught that when something is in the imagination, it's not "real". We have constant evidence that this must be "true", because when we imagine something, it just seems to only be in the imagination, not in the "outside world". The news flash here is that when you imagine anything, the quantum particles of which you and your world are made, begin to change and re-form in response to the imagining. In this dimension, here on this planet, we have set up a linear "time line", so that events occur in a sequence. Thus, we can more easily "track", and we can apply language in the description of these sequences. This, of course, is limiting, in that to the degree we are committed to this time line approach, the more it is necessary for us to apply physical effort to "make happen" what we desire coming out of the imagination. The truth of the matter is that once it is imagined, it is already on its way to you. Sure, you may need to respond with physical action as a "player" in the physical actualization of what was imagined, but essentially, it is a matter of simply observing the manifestation.
I go into this explanation, because we need to acknowledge how powerful the imagination is, especially when it comes to healing the body, or any facet of our lives--past, present or future. One of the most basic tools is LIGHT. Light IS consciousness, so when you create light for healing purposes, this light is a powerful agent for doing so.
In the ancient arts of Taoism, there are many "light meditations" to use in any number of ways. I recommend reading the works of Mantak Chia, a Taoist and QiGong master. One of the most basic uses of light, is to simply send it to whatever needs healing in the body, whether it be a slight discomfort or an unwanted chronic condition. The body responds to light with its own healing powers, which are considerable (see intro). Imagine the light infusing and becoming the part of the body needing it. You'll find that by consistently using this method, healing will speed up, and the condition addressed will not "get worse" or have "complications". The light can be various colors, shapes, motions and intensities. The key is to KNOW this light is performing a valuable service to the body. -- From 25 No Cost Health & Healing Hacks by Boyd Martin)

Be It To See It
As I consider the recent events in the country, I am reminded of my own "Dark Night of the Soul". I had separated from my wife, the band I was in was breaking up, I was having a lot of problems with a painful back, my old beater car was barely running, and I had no real source of income. I was staying with a musician friend, sleeping on a piece of foam in his basement. Things looked pretty grim.
I sat in my car at the local park listening to some guy on the radio talking about making things better in your life by trying to "fake it till you make it". I chuckled to myself in irony, because pretending to be something I wasn't seemed to be a big denial of my very "real" situation. Wasn't it hypocritical to pretend to be successful and happy when I was destitute and depressed?
I kept mulling that over as I began a walk in the park. It was a typical cloudy day in the Pacific Northwest, and even the park itself seemed depressed. I plopped down on a park bench, looking down at some ants crawling on my shoes, when suddenly a dapper-looking older gentleman suddenly appeared, saying, "Mind if I join you?"
"I guess," I replied, and continued my ant survey. "You seem a bit down," he said. "Yeah, things are far from perfect. Someone said I should 'fake it till I make it', and I'm having a problem with that," I confessed.
The man looked up to the sky and chuckled. "I suppose you think it's hypocritical to pretend to feel good about bad circumstances," he winked. I nodded.
"Here's a better one. How about, 'Be it to see it'." He smiled broadly, and nodded back at me the way I had nodded at him. "Life reflects back to you the way you're feeling towards it, you know." He suddenly looked at his watch. "Well, enjoy your day," and promptly stood up and walked off. I wanted to scoff at him, but the twinkle in his eye had thrown me.
It was starting to get dark, so I headed back to my car, aware now of how depressed and sarcastic I'd been being about everything. I was definitely feeling the victim--a real study in "woe is me", and observing that in myself was enough to snap me out of my funk somewhat. I started to feel a little different about my circumstances--that maybe things didn't have to be so bad.
The next day I got a call from a woman offering me a job setting up a website for her business. She had heard I was having a hard time, and even set up a room for me to rent from a friend of hers. Things were turning around for me, and that showed me the power of changing my feelings about how I was being. Light at the end of a very long tunnel began showing through.
The woman who hired me ended up becoming my significant other, and the website I designed for her business became Pure Energy Rx.
Since then, I've made it a priority to spot and release feelings of discouragement, hopelessness and doubt. These are the feelings that can take us into darkness and distress. All of these negative emotions arise from fear. They arise from the kind of fear that seems to force us to imagine the worst-case scenarios--the "what ifs" that seem so possible, even circling around when things are going good.
I've come to believe that these thoughts and feelings are at the core of all problems we see in society. It's a matter of a belief that we are somehow not "good enough" for good things to happen to us. There is a deep skepticism about how lovable we really are. And when we buy into that lie is when things go sideways for us.
There's a term I like that helps me when things get dark, and that's "jubilee". It originated from religious beliefs in various cultures about a celebration of a future time of happiness and abundance, and by feeling that jubilee helps to bring it about.
Life is a becoming. It is a journey from dark to light. Even when it seems to be going from light to dark, at some point, it all turns around to become dark to light. By allowing the jubilee of light to shine on dark events, we are claiming to the universe that we want love to define life.
As vessels of love, we celebrate our being, and celebrate the being of our loved ones and all of humanity. We KNOW that those of us lost in depression and despair, will find the light, and that certainty just might tip the scales for those living in darkness.
To your quantum health,
Boyd Martin
