Change "Bad" Habits with Subtle Energy

Your brain, which is the physical seat of your mind, has tremendous ability to direct the flow of energy. Even if you were unaware of that, you have been doing that every day through the attitudes and thought patterns that determine the quality of your life. But how does one change the energy surrounding a habit? Well, it starts with simple imagination. There is a saying in the ancient Korean Sundo tradition: "Energy goes where the mind goes." That's why you have to start with your mind itself, which is where any bad habit starts. For example, if you have a habit of overeating, you first have to be able to imagine yourself making better choices before you can begin to change. Here's what I recommend for a daily habit-change visualization:

  1. Sit comfortably and relax your mind and body as much as possible. (You may want to do some simple stretching and meditation exercises first.)
  2. Visualize yourself going through your day, starting with getting up, getting dressed, and getting ready for the day.
  3. Imagine every step of the day happening without struggle or any negative emotions.
  4. When you get to the point where you are tempted to partake in your bad habit, imagine yourself making the best choice instead of the automatic choice. As you make the healthy choice, imagine a beam of bright light coming into the top of your head, filling you with real energy, instead of the temporary boost you get from the bad habit.
  5. After you conclude this visualization, stop and once again imagine a beam of energy filling your body as you make the right choice.
Often, we develop negative habits because of some hurt or deficit that we feel. For example, emotional wounds might lead to overeating, and stress might lead to cigarette smoking. That's why you must work on releasing dark energies from your body if you want to change. In a way, these things are energy vacuums that suck energy from us and that leave us wanting to find false energy through bad habits. Instead of feeling real energy, we seek out a sugar rush or spend hours surfing the web for titillating information. To remedy this, try deep relaxation and energy clearing:
  • Lie down in a comfortable spot on a carpet or a yoga mat. Breathe deeply, but naturally into your chest and relax your whole body as much as possible. Part your legs shoulder width and place your arms to the side at 45 degree angles.
  • Begin to breathe more deeply into the abdomen and visualize releasing through the arms and legs with each breath. Relax more and more deeply, and imagine fresh energy coming into every part of your body. Imagine bright light filling your heart and brain, releasing you from dark memories and old emotional turmoil.
I recommend keeping a journal during this period as a way of keeping track of your progress as you implement the above exercises. You can ask yourself, "What old injuries am I feeding with this habit? How can I love myself in a better way?" Treat yourself with gentle kindness and compassion since your injured inner child is often at the center of these habits. And, whatever happens, keep going and keep a positive mind.

Monks Demonstrate Mind Over Matter

monks A study published in the Journal EXPLORE, The Journal of Science and Healing conducted by scientists at National Kaohsiung Normal University, National Taiwan University, and the Institute of Noetic Sciences conducted a double-blind, controlled condition experiment, using Arabidopsis Thaliana seeds (cabbage variety), and measured differences in hypocotyl length, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll between seeds hydrated with intentionally treated vs. untreated water.

The hypocotyl is the stem of a germinating seed, anthocyanin refers to specific cell biology properties of a plant, and chlorophyll deals with the biology of the green pigment found within plants. The study was designed as follows:

Three Buddhist monks focused their intention on commercially bottled water with the goal of improving the growth of seeds; bottled water from the same source served as an untreated control. The germination process was repeated three times in each experiment, each time using new seeds, and then the entire experiment was repeated four times.

The results of the Taiwan study showed a significant decrease in hypocotyl length, a significant increase in anthocyanin (treated mean 17.0 ± 0.31 mg, untreated mean, and a "modest" increase in chlorophyll.

In a broader experimnent, Dean Radin, the Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Sciences along with Masaru Emoto, Takashige Kizu, and Nancy Lund, designed an experiment that tested the effect of focussed attention to alter water molecules.

Over three days, 1,900 people in Austria and Germany focused their intentions towards water samples located inside an electromagnetically shielded room in California. Water samples located near the target water, but unknown to the people providing intentions, acted as "proximal" controls. Other samples located outside the shielded room acted as distant controls. Ice drops formed from samples of water in the different treatment conditions were photographed by a technician, each image was assessed for aesthetic beauty by over 2,500 independent judges, and the resulting data were analyzed, all by individuals blind with respect to the underlying treatment conditions. Results suggested that crystal images in the intentionally treated condition were rated as aesthetically more beautiful than proximal control crystals. This outcome replicates the results of an earlier pilot test.

In fact, in 1982, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries coined the term "shinrin yoku", which means "forest bathing." While we stroll around the forest, breathing in the fresh air, airborne chemicals like phytoncides (a chemical many plants give off to fight disease) are also entering our system. When this happens, the human body responds by increasing the number of natural killer blood cells (a type of white blood cell) which attack virus-infected cells.

In one 2009 study, participants spent three days and two nights in a forested area. Their blood and urine were sampled before, during, and after the trip. Natural killer cell activity measured significantly higher during the days spent in the forest and the effect lasted up to 30 days after the trip. This suggests that a few days in nature every month could potentially allow your natural killer cell activity to maintain at a higher functioning level, protecting you better.

A research analysis of 10 UK studies involving over 1200 participants considered all the ways time in nature (known as green exercise) can improve a person's mental health and wellbeing. The results of this analysis proved that both men and women have similar self-esteem improvements after experiencing time spent in nature, and the boost in mood particularly impacted men. The analysis showed the greatest improvements in mental health with the participants who were struggling with a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety.

Results of a 2008 study compared the restorative effects of natural versus urban environments, with natural environments proving vastly more beneficial. Nature, which is filled with intriguing stimuli, is able to modestly grab your attention in a way that requires no effort or additional actions. Urban areas can be filled with stimulation that captures your attention and requires additional directed actions (for example, stopping at a crosswalk).

Mindful Walking

mindful walking There's a great mindfulness drill I learned about from Gary Douglas of Access Consciousness, and it is fun to do and very revealing of our motivations and true desires. It is "Mindful Walking". There are different ways to do it, but a good starting one is to first determine a short path you are going to physically walk--say through your garden, or a short stretch of ground in a park--say, maybe 100 feet or so. Now, start walking, step by step, very slowly. As you slowly move, take in every bit of the five senses (or more). Observe the tendency to get bored, or hurry, or do something else with your mind. Instead, retrieve your attention back to the Walk. Observe the earth, the trees, the flowers, the grass, any flora and fauna, your breath, heart beat, pulses and other sensations. I've done this over a 100 foot stretch in a garden, taking 45 minutes to traverse the distance. At the end, I felt not only intimately connected with my surroundings, but also much more connected with Nature at large.

The other version of this is to walk at a normal pace, but keeping your attention on everything you are sensing, and observing what the mind does. Refrain from following any particular thought sequence, such as thinking about future events, or plans, or past experiences. Keep it all in the NOW. Feeling All The Feels

feels A couple of friends started up a "memories" group for my old hometown high school. I mean, who could resist that? It has been fun seeing and thinking about people I haven't seen or thought of for over 50 years, but something else was happening inside me.

With some casual searching, I was able to find my high school yearbook, and realized that I never had bought one at the time, nor was I interested. My senior year of high school was fraught with emotional intensity, raging hormones, and rebellion, so the last thing I wanted was to remember it.

As I scrolled through the pages, I found out pictures of me were featured prominently in the various sections: Speaker's Club president, Thespian (I played Willy Loman in "Death of a Salesman"), various choirs, the school newspaper, Commencement speaker, and even the radio internship I did. Yikes! I was busy! And, you know, all I remember from all that was how unhappy and depressed I was. Now, 50 years later, I see I was having the time of my life, was in love a few times, was "being a voice" in the community, and living a pretty vibrant life.

One picture was of me at the Senior Prom with my girlfriend at the time, dancing. I kind of remember it, but the look on my face sent me right into the feelings I was having. There was affection, humor, grace, and fun, and suddenly a floodgate of awareness opened and I saw how I had placed a big boulder of conclusions about high school that blocked most of my feelings and memories of the experience. I was so intent on defining myself as a maligned malcontent, that I literally blanked out the feelings of my experiences.

I woke up the next day having spent most of the night "running through" other times in my life that were supposedly difficult, and I realized I had done the same thing for them, too. No wonder life seems so short--I was blocking out big sections of it!

Last year, my brother had sent me some VHS videos to convert to digital formats, and one of them was about a visit my wife at the time and I had made to my brother's house in the Los Angeles Area. I did not remember any of it. All I remembered of that general time period was how unhappy I was, and how badly I wanted out of my marriage. I figured out I had cancelled out all my other experiences and feelings in favor of my feeling of unhappiness.

I did slowly recover some of those memories, but my state of mind wasn't allowing me to feel my life, and this brings me to my point (finally)...

With all the turmoil lately with pandemics, riots and fake news, it's easy to draw a quick conclusion, and then rapidly find evidence to support that conclusion, at the expense of really seeing and feeling what is actually going on.

The feelings we have about an issue are very often driven by our past experiences that in turn frame that issue within a very narrow aperture of awareness. We see pictures of events and adopt other people's interpretation of those pictures, depending on how we want to feel about what is happening.

A friend of mine made a great point: "Everything is conspiratorial when it comes to controlling the narrative. The real conspiracy is diverting your attention from what you are actually seeing and feeling."

Buzz words and memes are carefully constructed by social manipulators to create emotional narratives that try to hook us into negative feelings and memories. When, instead, a few minutes of stepping back allows us to experience the feelings of all sides, and then put things in the positive context we would like for our own life experience.

If things seem hopeless, then you can be sure someone is benefiting from that hopelessness. If you're angry, someone is using that anger for their purposes.

That anger and hopelessness only hooks in when it matches a narrative we already have about our life or life in general. We chose to decide things were a certain way, and here is the direct evidence proving how right we are. As my mentor said recently, "Being right is a false flag operation. What is actually going on is to misdirect you from your own gut."

If we're not willing to really feel into both sides of a conflict, there can never be resolution. Our feelings create our thoughts, and our thoughts create our life. We choose how we feel about something, and if it seems like we didn't choose, then someone is controlling the narrative other than you.

So throw off the bonds of rightness and wrongness. Feel all the feels. Feel the way things really are. Everyone's right in some way, or there would be no conflict. If all feelings are valid, then the true Big Picture reveals itself, and the love that was always trying to get through can find a place in our hearts.

From the quantum perspective, all points of consciousness are connected. We have the ability to feel the feelings of others, and in so doing, we come to understand our place in the world and how love is driving us all forward toward a greater life.

So... Feel ALL the feels!
