If Ya Can't Do It For Yourself, Do It For Someone Else...
Defensiveness is a big barrier to self-improvement, reports Yoona Kang, a postdoc at the Annenberg School for Communication at Penn. The study produced a couple of pretty counter-intuitive findings. For one, it doesn't really matter so much what the advice-giver's intentions are. That might be comforting to someone who has a tendency to condescend or sneer, but it's alarming if you're the kind of person who uses advice to, like, help people. But perhaps more importantly, Kang also explained that people who are better at responding to advice tend to be the ones who take themselves less seriously. "Taking yourself less seriously isn't like abandoning all your values," she elaborated. "But if there's less seriousness, there's less to defend."
Kang's experiment involved two different tactics to try and put her subjects into a transcendent state of mind, the theory being that when we're feeling more transcendent, our defensiveness fades away and we're more likely to act on good advice. The first was a self-affirmation task, subjects ranked a list of values and wrote about the one they ranked highest. The second task primed them for compassion and thinking about others (basically, they got them to write nice notes to friends or strangers.) There was also a control group.
Over the course of the month that followed, members of each group received text messages priming them followed by a mix of messages reminding them to exercise more. They also wore fitness trackers. And wouldn't ya know it, the people who were primed first before receiving the messages actually did get out more. Kang thinks that this is because thinking of other people, or thinking about the "bigger things" makes us forget ourselves, to an extent, which helps suppress those defensive feelings that lead us to ignore good advice.
"People do extraordinary things for their loved ones that they'd probably never do for themselves," Kang explained. "It's fair to say that these kinds of self-transcendent attitudes are a really powerful force of change, and while this is an ancient idea, we still didn't really know exactly how it works, or why is it so powerful."
The compassion prompt was the more powerful of the two, though both were effective. And while shooting mom or dad or your cousin a "hope you're having a great day!" text in the morning sounds a little cheesy, that "ick factor" also recalls the findings from a recent UT Austin/University of Chicago Booth study published over the summer, about how the fear of looking silly keeps us from writing thank you notes.
That study found that you really don't look stupid when you say something nice to someone, even if you think you will. And yet this irrational fear keeps us from reaping all these great psychological benefits.
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Creating transcendent states is the role of our Meditation Elixirs. Five to ten drops a day adds energy to the upper chakras, creating activity in the higher centers of the brain, bringing out latent abilities and insights.
The Self-Simulating Universe
The most fundamental of these questions revolve around "why anything" and "why consciousness." Why is there anything here at all? What primal state of existence could have possibly birthed all that matter, energy, and time, all that everything? And how did consciousness arise--is it some fundamental proto-state of the universe itself, or an emergent phenomenon that is purely neurochemical and material in nature?
A new physics hypothesis attempts to answer both questions at the same time with a new spin on panpsychism that weds aspects of Nick Bostrom's Simulation Argument with something called "timeless emergentism." The hypothesis, outlined in a new paper by a team of researchers at the Quantum Gravity Research institute, is called the "panpsychic self-simulation model," and while the authors certainly aren't earning any points for intellectual modesty, their idea may just be capable of peacefully mapping some of the universe's most wild conundrums.
The first pieces of this puzzle you may have already heard of: the Simulation Argument is a pop-culture staple now, most famously popularized when Elon Musk claimed it's far more likely that we are living in a simulation created by an advanced intelligence. Then there is the age-old belief in panpsychism, which posits that the entire universe is a type of panconscious entity and that even ordinary matter is imbued with proto-consciousness.
The new argument gets rid of the middleman and suggests that panconsciousness itself is generating the simulations, not advanced aliens, and that the universe is one giant "mental self-simulation."
In other words, the universe is creating itself through thought, willing itself into existence on a perpetual loop that efficiently uses all mathematics and fundamental particles at its disposal.
The universe, they say, was always here (timeless emergentism) and is like one grand thought that creates mini thoughts, called "code-steps or actions", like a Matryoshka doll. Quantum Gravity physicist David Chester broke down some recent findings they feel bolster the argument: "While many scientists presume materialism to be true, we believe that quantum mechanics may provide hints that our reality is a mental construct. Recent advances in quantum gravity, such as seeing spacetime emergent via a hologram, also is a hint that spacetime is not fundamental. This is also compatible with ancient Hermetic and Indian philosophy. In a sense, the mental construct of reality creates spacetime to efficiently understand itself by creating a network of subconscious entities that can interact and explore the totality of possibilities."
The paper also suggests that the purpose of this single looping, self-generating consciousness is to explore and develop meaning through information. They also discuss future prospects, such as studying lucid dreams to better understand simulations and the idea of developing consciousness that does not require matter at all.
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: It has been postulated that the "subtle energy" we infuse our products with is the "background intelligence" of the universe, and when it merges with a point of consciousness (you) it amplifies certain higher functions of healing and transformation.
People Are Taking Placebos On Purpose, and It's Working
Time magazine recently published an article about a woman (now a 71-year old medical assistant) and her struggle with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). She tried everything, from drugs to changing her diet. It was a horrible way to live, she told the Times, as she was often huddled in a corner and keeled over in pain. It's something that can really debilitate your life. Approximately ten years ago today, she decided to enroll herself into a study, a first of its kind clinical trial, one where the patient would be receiving a placebo pill. The pill had no active ingredients, and she felt "deflated," that she got her hopes up for nothing. Three weeks later, after taking the pill twice daily, Buonanno (the 71-year old medical assistant) was symptom free. She had never gone so long without an attack. "I didn't have a clue what was going on," she says. "I still don't."
The placebo effect is a non-therapeutic treatment (like a sham pill), and it improves a patient's physical condition. This has been documented for centuries. The interesting thing about the study the woman decided to participate in, is the fact that patients taking the placebo pill were well aware that they were taking a placebo. With traditional placebo studies, patients are made to believe that they are taking something that will benefit them and improve their condition. In 2009, Harvard Medical School launched the first open-label placebo, where patients knew what they were taking, and they started with people who had IBS, including the 71- year old woman. As Time points out,
The findings were surprising. Nearly twice as many people in the trial who knowingly received placebo pills reported experiencing adequate symptom relief, compared with the people who received no treatment. Not only that but the men and women taking the placebo also doubled their rates of improvement to a point that was about equal to the effects of two IBS medications that were commonly used at the time.
The team of researchers, alongside a team at the Program in Placebo Studies and Therapeutic Encounter at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, have secured a $2.5 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to replicate the study mentioned above. So far, researchers have treated 270 patients and intend to treat approximately 100 more with IBV via their ongoing clinical trial.
There is no money in the placebo, which is why we probably haven't heard about it much, or not enough attention is paid to it. Today, it's well recognized in modern medicine, doctors at the Houston Veterans Affairs Medical Center, for example, have shown that fake surgeries – slicing people's knees open and sewing them back together without any treatment at all – provide the same improvements for people with osteoarthritis of the knee as real knee surgery.
QUANTUM HEALTH TIP: Use our E-4 Foundation Formula to amplify placebo effects, by energetically connecting the upper and lower energy centers of the body. Visualize what you want to heal, and take E-4. Great results!

Health & Healing Hack of the Week
Two-Pointing
Originally, two-pointing was delineated by Dr. Richard Bartlett as part of his body of work called "Matrix Energetics", and covered at length in his book by the same name. Two Pointing is a way to collapse an energy blockage by using two index fingers touching two points around an injured or painful area of the body. Do this using several different points. By putting the attention on two points simultaneously, it collapses the "standing wave" that is blocking or inhibiting energy flows across the painful area. I like to use this technique along with My Liquid Fish and Take It Away. Great first aid! Entertaining note: I also tried it on my wallet--and it worked! - From 25 No Cost Health & Healing Hacks by Boyd Martin)

This Quantum Life by Boyd Martin, Caretaker, Pure Energy Rx
It Takes As Long As It Takes
Walter Longmire, from the novels and TV series would bristle when his staff would say, "It is what it is." From Walt's view as sheriff, things are never what they appear to be when it comes to crime, and to accept things as they are is tantamount to ignoring what's wrong.
Personally, though, I like the "it is what it is" meme, because it allows whatever it is to be. Then, it's much easier to see what is actually there, because you've given up your judgments and conclusions with that statement. It may have made Walt's life a lot easier if he would have accepted that view.
There's another one: "It takes as long as it takes." This short-circuits expectations of duration. Now, we don't say "it takes as long as it takes" if we're baking cookies, since baking times are a known quantity; and it's not really applicable to a wash cycle of a washing machine. Where we use it is when we don't know how long something is going to take. This is an important distinction, especially when it comes to healing or self-transformation. We are trekking through uncharted territory, and to have an expectation about how long it "should" take, is a recipe for suffering. We don't know, and we can become comfortable with that.
Many times I've been forced to admit that when it comes to personal transformation, I'm not the brightest lightning bolt in the storm. My assessments of what "needs to done" to improve myself are often wildly inaccurate, and when I compare myself to someone else (nasty habit), and they are soaring with success and fulfillment, it's hard for me to realize that I've just got more work to do than they, so I tell myself because of that, my rewards may be even greater. Or not.
The point is, we have all come to this incarnation with our own special depth of unconscious baggage. The amount of the baggage is solely dependent on who we are, how we are being, and the experiences we've had. Since no one person can ever have the same experiences as the next, it is impossible to judge the journey to spiritual freedom for any one individual. Add to that, our own assessments of our personal power levels, our level of acceptance of self, and overall self love make it indisputably futile to figure out how long it will take before we are where we desire to be.
When an unwanted condition or needed change takes more time than we erroneously predicted, we often just want it to be over. We start to question our strength, our perseverance and willingness to do what it takes. It's at this exact moment when we need to step back, drop the expectations, embrace the infinite wisdom of the Universe, and bask in deep gratitude for what we do have, and the beauty of who we are.
It's not like any unwanted condition or situation is going to last forever--that's a religious control game. Everything is changing constantly, and the only exception to that is existence itself. And remember, it was our choices that got us here, so it will be our choices getting us out.
I've been on a journey with Source Energy Medicine which I began about a year and a half ago. I've been very diligent with my daily practice, and have gone beyond with my assignments. What became glaringly obvious after about a year, was that my beliefs and conclusions about my self worth were much more deeply destructive than I ever acknowledged; and my willingness to allow and receive gifts and blessings has been far below the "average", so my results have been modest at best. It's been a classic "two steps forward, 1.999 steps back": slow.
I admit, when I started, I made a point of asking about time frame. And because I'm sure he's been asked that a million times, my coach just said nine months to a year, based on his experience. Well, he obviously hadn't run into me yet! When I voiced my frustrations about this, he said, "Persistence is golden. Many people come to this program with high expectations, only to leave before getting everything they wanted out of it. Or, in some cases, anything out of it."
So that shed a different light on things for me, and allowed me to pull myself out of the "what's wrong with me" short-circuit, and into a non-judgment space where all change is good, with the journey being more important than the destination.
All I need to check is my willingness to persist, the purity of my intent to go higher, and embracing every change as progress.
I also came to the perspective that for an infinite, immortal being to fret about "how long" something is taking, is a bit like a whale worrying about how much water is in the ocean: we won't need it all to get what we desire.
Fixating on time only creates the experience of more time. I'm letting all that go now so I can get some enjoyment out of my journey. After all, it takes as long as it takes, and is all the sweeter for it.
To your quantum health,
Boyd Martin
